New Delhi: Apart from Hariyali Teej, National Handloom Day (National Handloom Day 2024) is also being celebrated in India today. After agriculture, handloom is the largest and most important sector in India. Handloom artisans prepare beautiful saris and other things from cotton, silk and wool. Handloom is a major source of livelihood in India. This day is celebrated to honor the handloom community and their significant contribution to economic development.

History of Handloom

National Handloom Day was started on 7 August in memory of the 'Swadeshi' movement. The Swadeshi movement started in the year 1905. Its aim was to boycott foreign goods. Due to this movement, Khadi was started in almost every house in India. The handloom industry has been providing employment to hand artisans not just from today but for a long time, but still the condition of these artisans is not very good. This day was celebrated for the first time on 7 August 2015. Since then this day is being celebrated every year. The 10th Handloom Day is being celebrated on 7 August 2024.

After agriculture, the handloom sector contributes significantly to India's economy. This day is celebrated to highlight the contribution of handloom in the socio-economic development of the country. The purpose of celebrating this day is also to appreciate the goods made by Indian weavers and workers.

Many types of programs are organized on the occasion of National Handloom Day. Efforts are made to tell people the importance of handloom through fashion shows, handicraft exhibitions, seminars and workshops. The designs and colors of handloom products make them special.
