News Topical, Digital Desk : A new report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has made some shocking revelations about the black fungus (mucormycosis) that is spreading rapidly during the Corona  period. According to this report, people who have recovered from black fungus are facing long-term health problems such as facial deterioration and difficulty in speaking.

This study is published in a medical journal named Clinical Microbiology and Infection. In this, 686 patients admitted in 26 hospitals of the country were examined. According to the author of the study, Dr. Rizwan Suliankatchi Abdulkader, even after a year of recovery from black fungus, more than 70% of the patients were found to be suffering from physical or mental problems.

People faced these problems

He said that those who received a combination of surgery and antifungal medicines had a higher chance of survival. But many people suffered from deterioration of facial features and mental stress after the treatment. This study was conducted in collaboration with the All India Mucormycosis Consortium, which included patients from both cities and villages.

 

Patients were infected with black fungus

Most of these patients were infected with black fungus between March and July 2021, and 80% of these patients were those who also had corona . In this case, Dr. Rizwan said that these problems are not just about thinking, but have become a problem in the real life of many patients. Such as face getting spoiled, difficulty in speaking and being worried all the time.

He said that there is still time when India should focus not only on saving lives but also on the mental and physical health of recovered patients .

Here are some important statistics

  • Of the 686 patients, 14.7% (101 patients) died within a year. Most of the deaths occurred during treatment in the hospital.
  • Patients who were given medicines like amphotericin B and posaconazole fared better and had a higher chance of survival.
  • 80% of the patients developed black fungus during the second wave of corona. The major reasons for this were considered to be diabetes, steroids and oxygen therapy.

What is black fungus?

Black fungus, also known as mucormycosis, is a serious fungal infection. It can affect the nose, respiratory tract, eyes, brain and jaw. This disease is more common in people who take medicines that weaken the immune system, such as cancer or transplant patients. People suffering from diabetes are also at higher risk. Its spread increased further due to the use of some medicines during Corona.
