This is not just a thread. It is called Rakshasutra, while tying it the Pandit also chants mantras. It is said that the person who has Rakshasutra tied on his hand does not face any harm. Its tradition started when Indra was fighting in the war between gods and demons.

Then his wife Indrani tied a protective thread on his hand with the wish of victory over the demons and due to its effect he was victorious. This sacred thread protects us from evil eyes and negativity. Along with this, the blessings of the gods and goddesses also remain on us continuously.

There are rules for tying Kalawa

But, there are some rules for tying Kalava. Kalava should never be tied with empty hands. When Pandit ji ties Kalava, if you cannot hold anything in your hand, then at least you must hold rice grains.

If possible, you should definitely take some Dakshina in your hand. After tying the Kalava, this Dakshina should be given to the Pandit. Along with this, while tying the Kalava, there should be a handkerchief on the head or you can keep your other hand on the head.

How many times should you wrap

A question that often arises is how many times should Kalava be wrapped around the hand? Remember that Kalava should always be wrapped around the wrist an odd number of times such as 3, 5 or 7 times. It brings good luck to the house and happiness and prosperity always increases. Kalava should never be wrapped an even number of times such as 2, 4 or 6 times.
