News Topical, Digital Desk : President Zelensky has signed a law allowing Ukrainians over the age of 60 to join the armed forces. As the Russian invasion continues into its fourth year, the military is struggling to recruit.

According to an explanatory note on the Parliament website, the law will allow them to sign one-year contracts for non-combat roles upon passing medical tests.

The note said that a large number of citizens aged 60 years and above have expressed a strong desire to voluntarily join in the defence of the country."

It says it is necessary to involve a larger number of people willing to defend Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ukraine has launched several initiatives

Ukraine has launched a number of initiatives to attract more people into the armed forces – including one-year contracts for those aged 18 to 24 and financial incentives.

 

The age limit for recruitment in the army has also been reduced from 27 to 25

It also lowered the age limit for military recruitment from 27 to 25 in April 2024 - resisting calls by the US administration to lower it to 18.
