At the same time, brothers also take a pledge to protect their sisters in every way.
But, this festival of Raksha Bandhan is not limited to just brothers and sisters. There is a tradition of tying Rakhi to gods and goddesses as well. Mythological stories explain its deep meaning. Let's know about it…
When Indrani tied the protective thread
According to the legend, there was a war going on between the gods and the demons. In this, the demons were constantly dominating Devraj Indra. Then Indra's wife Indrani got worried and went to Dev Guru Brihaspati to ask for a solution. On this Brihaspati advised her to make a sacred thread (Rakhi) and after consecrating it, tie it on Indra's wrist.
Indrani did the same. After this Indra won the war. It is said that the tradition of tying Raksha Sutra started after this incident. Over time it became a festival to strengthen the sacred relationship between brothers and sisters. Presently sisters tie Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers and wish for their safety and progress.
Lakshmi tied a rakhi to King Bali
Asura King Bali was a great donor. He had completed 100 yagnas and was trying to take over heaven. Then to stop him, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vaman on the request of the gods. He went to King Bali to ask for alms. Bali donated three steps of land to him.
Vishnu measured the sky and the netherworld in just two steps. Bali put his head forward to take the third step. Pleased with Bali's generosity, Lord Vishnu asked him to ask for a boon. Bali asked for the boon of staying with him in the netherworld.
Vishnu Ji went to Patal Lok with Bali. Meanwhile, Lakshmi Ji became very worried about this. To bring Narayan back, she took the form of a poor Brahmini and went to King Bali. She tied a Rakhi to him and took a promise to send Vishnu back. In this way, Lakshmi Ji was able to bring Lord Vishnu back to Vaikunth by tying a Rakhi to Bali.
Draupadi had tied a Rakhi to Shri Krishna
Before the Mahabharata war, in a meeting Shishupal started abusing Shri Krishna. Because of the promise made to his aunt, Shri Krishna forgave his 100 crimes. Also warned him that if he did this again, the consequences would not be good. But Shishupal did not listen.
Shri Krishna then used the Sudarshan Chakra on Shishupal. During this, his hand got hurt and started bleeding. Seeing this, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari and tied it on Shri Krishna's hand. Later, when Draupadi's sari was torn, Shri Krishna repaid the debt of that sari in such a way that Dushasan got tired of pulling the sari, but Draupadi's modesty was not even touched.
