News Topical, Digital Desk : The British government has taken a major and important decision to improve children's health. Advertisements targeting children for junk food and sugary beverages are now strictly prohibited. The government says this will help prevent diseases like obesity and give children a healthy start in life.
According to the UK government's decision, starting January 5, 2026, advertisements for junk food and sugary drinks will be completely banned on television before 9 p.m. Additionally, such advertisements will be prohibited at all times on online platforms. This rule applies to foods high in fat, sugar, and salt.
What plan has the government made ?
The government believes this will prevent children from being repeatedly exposed to unhealthy foods and make it easier for families to make informed, healthy choices. The UK Ministry of Health stated that the government's aim is to give every child a healthy start.
The Health Ministry also said that the focus now is on preventing diseases rather than treating them , so that people can remain healthy for a longer period and the NHS ( National Health Service) can work better when needed.
The government increased the sugar tax.
This decision was first announced in December 2024. Furthermore, the government has already increased the sugar tax, which now includes packaged products such as milkshakes, ready-to-drink coffee, and sweetened yogurt drinks.
According to the government, research clearly shows that advertising influences children's eating habits, leading to unhealthy food choices at an early age, which in turn leads to obesity and other diseases.
According to statistics, approximately 22 % of children starting primary school in England are overweight or obese. This number rises to more than a third by the age of 11. Tooth decay is the leading cause of hospitalization for children aged 5 to 9.
How many children can be saved from obesity ?
According to government estimates, this ban will reduce children's diets by approximately 7.2 billion calories each year. This will prevent approximately 20,000 cases of childhood obesity. The government says that in the long run, this will reduce pressure on the health system and provide health benefits to the entire population.
