News Topical, Digital Desk : A major security crisis has arisen after an official with Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Authority ( NRA) lost his smartphone while traveling to China. The phone contained highly sensitive information, including the names and contact details of nuclear security staff.

Phone goes missing during security check

According to media reports, the incident occurred in November when the NRA employee was on a personal trip to China. His phone was lost during security checks at Shanghai airport .

Surprisingly, the officer only realized the phone was missing three days later. Despite contacting airport officials, no trace of the phone has been found.

Major setback for Japan's nuclear program

The safety lapse comes as Japan moves towards reactivating its nuclear power programme nearly 15 years after the Fukushima Daiichi disaster.

The NRA was formed to tighten nuclear safety standards after the 2011 tsunami and earthquake. Experts believe that this data falling into the wrong hands could threaten the safety of nuclear installations.

Japanese authorities have not yet issued any official statement on the potential impact of this data leak, but the incident has raised questions about protocols and data security internationally.
