News Topical, Digital Desk : Tensions are growing over Greenland, which is under Danish control. Greenland maintains that it is not allied with the United States, but with Denmark.
While US President Donald Trump has signaled that Greenland is in trouble, he has stated clearly that he will accept nothing less than US control over Greenland.
Trump furious over Greenland
The US president has been steadily increasing pressure to seize control of the island. This rhetoric has intensified as the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland are scheduled to meet with US Vice President J.D. Vance at the White House.
Trump reiterated his argument in a post on his internet media platform, Truth Social, on Wednesday that Greenland is essential to US national security.
He said, 'NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) should play a leading role in controlling it, otherwise Russia or China will take it over.'
Required for the Golden Dome
"Having Greenland in American hands will make NATO even more powerful and effective. Nothing less is acceptable," Trump said.
Trump said all options are available to secure the strategically important island from Russian and Chinese occupation. Referring to the proposed defense system, he said, “It's also very important for our Golden Dome.”
Trump's statement came hours before the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met with Vance at the White House.
"If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark, we choose Denmark," Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said in Copenhagen on Tuesday, according to the AP.
We choose NATO. We choose the European Union." Asked about this statement, Trump said, "I disagree with him. I don't know who he is. I don't know anything about him, but this is going to be a big problem for him."
This is Denmark's stance
NATO ally Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, said in a statement to European allies last week that if the US annexed Greenland, it would mean the end of the NATO military alliance.
This mineral-rich island belongs to its people, and only they have the right to decide matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.
Macron said the impact would be unprecedented. According to Reuters, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that if the sovereignty of any European country and its allies is affected, the impact would be unprecedented.
He made this remark in reference to Trump's attempt to gain control over the Arctic island of Greenland. "We don't underestimate the statements on Greenland," Macron said.
