News Topical, Digital Desk : Iran, rattled by the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US and Israeli attacks, is retaliating with full force. In the latest development, Iran has attacked an oil tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman.
A Palau-flagged oil tanker was attacked off Oman's Musandam Peninsula. The attack came after drone strikes on the country's Duqm port. Oman's Maritime Security Centre (MSC) said at least four people were injured in the attack.
15 Indian crew members were on board
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic route for oil shipping around the world, described as the world's most sensitive maritime chokepoint. According to Oman MSC, the oil tanker, Skylight, was carrying a crew of 20, including 15 Indians and five Iranian nationals. The crew was evacuated after the attack, which occurred five nautical miles from Khasab Port in Musandam.
What did MSC say?
"The Maritime Security Centre has reported that the Republic of (Palau)-flagged oil tanker (SKYLIGHT) was targeted 5 nautical miles north of Khasab Port in Musandam Governorate and all crew members of the tanker, totalling 20 people, including 15 Indian and 5 Iranian nationals, have been evacuated," MSC said in a post.
