News Topical, Digital Desk : Protests in Minneapolis, Minnesota, against alleged high-handedness by immigration agents have turned violent. In response, President Donald Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act. He also threatened to send in the military.

President Trump's threat comes after protests erupted overnight in a Minnesota city after an agent shot an American man in the leg. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said an officer opened fire after three Venezuelan nationals attacked him with a shovel and a broom handle.

The protests began last week

Tensions have been running high in Minneapolis since an immigration agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good last week, sparking protests across the country.

What is the Insurrection Act?

The Insurrection Act is a 19th-century law that allows active-duty military personnel to be deployed for law enforcement within the U.S. Trump has previously said he might use the 1807 law elsewhere, but he has never done so.

What did Trump say now?

He posted on Truth Social that he would use the law if Minnesota authorities failed to stop protesters and insurrectionists. Nearly 3,000 officers have been deployed in Minnesota in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said on X on Wednesday, "Regardless of the cause of this incident, the situation we are seeing in our city is not right."
