News Topical, Digital Desk : A horrific case of extremism has emerged amid ongoing violent protests in Bangladesh. A Hindu man was beaten to death, tied to a tree, and set on fire amid anti-India protests.
In Mymensingh, Bangladesh, a Hindu man was beaten to death by a mob accused of insulting Islam. During the killing, protesters chanted "Allah Hu Akbar."
According to Bangladeshi media reports, angry protesters set the body of 30-year-old Dipu Chandra Das on fire.
The murder of the Hindu youth in Bangladesh comes at a time when violent protests are underway in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the July uprising.
No place for violence
Meanwhile, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus strongly condemned the lynching of the Hindu man, saying there was no place for such violence in the new Bangladesh. The government promised that those responsible for this heinous crime would not be spared.
Earlier, in a statement, Bangladesh's interim government said, “In this difficult time, we appeal to every citizen to honor the martyr Hadi by rejecting and opposing violence, incitement, and hatred.”
According to Bangladeshi Bengali media outlet Barta Bazar, Dipu Chandra was accused of making derogatory remarks about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad during an event held at the factory to mark World Arabic Language Day. The accusation sparked tension in the area. An angry mob then beat Dipu to death.
The situation worsened after the death, when a mob tied the body to a tree with a rope, beat it while chanting various slogans, and then set it on fire. This spread panic among local residents.
Confirming the incident, Bhaluka Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Firoz Hossain said that a man was killed for allegedly insulting the Prophet, and that Das's body was in police custody. Condemning the incident, Awami League leader Mohammad Ali Arafat said Bangladesh was sliding into complete extremism.
Yunus assured immediate action
Addressing the nation late Thursday night, Yunus said, "Today I bring you very sad news. Sharif Osman Hadi, a fearless front-line fighter of the July uprising and spokesperson for the Inquilab Manch, is no longer with us." Yunus promised to bring those involved in this brutal murder to justice as soon as possible and said that no leniency would be shown to the killers.
Yunus's press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, posted in Bengali on Facebook, strongly and unequivocally condemning the violence, threats, arson, and destruction of life and property. The government also called the young leader Hadi a martyr and urged people to renounce violence, incitement, and hatred.
