News Topical, Digital Desk : The blockbuster film Sholay has completed 50 years of its release. The film was written by Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan. Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan played the lead roles in this 1975 film, while Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar were in important roles. This year the film is celebrating its 50th anniversary, so veteran actress Hema Malini, who played the famous character of Basanti in the film, expressed her happiness and also made a revelation about it.

What did the actress say about Sholay

Recently, Hema Malini said that at that time she did not think that Sholay would be such a big hit and people would remember it even after so many years. Talking to ANI, the actress-turned-politician said, 'It feels great. When I started working on 'Sholay', I did not know that it would be such a hit, and 50 years later, you will ask me questions about it in Parliament. That was a different time.' She also stressed that now no other Sholay can be made.

The film became popular after it left the theatres

Released in 1975, Sholay became a favourite in Indian cinema due to its strong story, memorable characters, great dialogues and evergreen songs like 'Yeh Dosti', 'Mehbooba Mehbooba', 'Haan Jab Tak Hai Jaan', 'Holi Ke Din' etc. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film did not do well at the box office but went on to become a huge hit among the audiences over the years and became their favourite.

The story of the film is centered on a village Ramgarh where a retired cop Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) plans to defeat the notorious bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) with the help of mischievous Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra). Upon reaching the village, the two realize the threat posed by Gabbar Singh and redouble their efforts to help Thakur. Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini played Jai and Veeru's lovers Basanti and Radha.
