Guru Nanak Jayanti (Importance of Gurpurab)

On the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti, a morning procession is taken out. His followers perform bhajans and kirtans on this occasion. During the procession, followers carry the Sikh flag, known as the Nishan Sahib. On this occasion, the Guru Granth Sahib is continuously recited for 48 hours. A langar is also organized on Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Guru Nanak Dev was the first Guru of Sikhism. He was born in Talwandi, Punjab, now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. As a young man, he experienced spiritual power. He advised people to follow the path of truth (Guru Nanak teachings). He also denounced external ostentation. He encouraged people to help one another. Guru Nanak Dev died on September 22, 1539.
