News Topical, Digital Desk : The ongoing tension between the United States and Iran suddenly changed when US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire just before the deadline. Just hours before, Trump had been issuing dire warnings of "total destruction" and "the end of civilization" for Iran.
Trump had said on social media that if Iran did not meet his conditions, an entire civilization could be destroyed. But about an hour before the deadline, he suddenly announced a two-week ceasefire. He said that if Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz, the US would halt attacks for two weeks. This decision is being seen as a major shift in his stance.
Constantly changing deadlines
Since the conflict began on February 28th, Trump has repeatedly warned Iran and set deadlines. On March 21st, he said Iran must open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, or the US would attack Iran's power plants. However, each time the deadline approached, he extended it, citing negotiations. Sometimes a five-day extension was given, and sometimes a new 10-day deadline was set.
On March 30 and April 2, Trump issued strong statements threatening a massive bombing raid if a deal was not reached soon. He even threatened to target Iranian bridges, power plants, and oil installations.
Strictness increased in the last days
Trump's statements became more strident in early April. On April 4th, he declared that time was running out and that Iran would have to make a decision quickly. On April 5th, he openly threatened to destroy Iran's vital infrastructure. He announced on social media that there would be a "Power Plant Day" and a "Bridge Day," meaning major attacks.
On the morning of April 7th, he made his strongest statement, declaring that an entire civilization would perish if a settlement was not reached. This clearly indicated that the situation had become extremely tense.
Last minute ceasefire
Shortly before the deadline, Trump abruptly announced a ceasefire, stating that the decision was made after discussions with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir.
Trump said he decided to halt the attacks at Pakistan's request and described it as a "double-sided ceasefire," meaning a ceasefire agreed upon by both sides. He also said the US had achieved most of its military objectives and was now moving forward with negotiations for a lasting peace.
Both countries moved towards talks
According to Trump, Iran has proposed 10 points, which the US considers a strong basis for negotiations. He stated that agreement has been reached on most of the disputed issues. He also clarified that two weeks have been given to reach a final agreement, during which time both countries will continue negotiations.
