News Topical, Digital Desk : Two police officers have been killed in northeastern Colombia. The Colombian government has blamed the killings on the National Liberation Army (NLA), a Marxist guerrilla force that has been active in Colombia since the 1960s.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro strongly condemned the killing. "I strongly condemn the killing of a police superintendent and deputy superintendent in Cúcuta," Petro wrote on Twitter. Petro also issued a warning to militias along the border between Colombia and Venezuela.
2 terrorist attacks confirmed
According to General William Ospina, Director of the Colombian National Police, two terrorist attacks occurred in the Norte de Santander Department. One attack killed two police officers, and the other injured two other soldiers. Images of the explosions are also making headlines in Colombian media.
Negotiations with the NLA are closed.
Initial investigations indicate the NLA took this action following a crackdown by the police. The NLA was formed in 1964. The Petro government had been holding peace talks with the NLA, but the talks were halted following a terrorist attack earlier this year.
