News Topical, Digital Desk : The Election Commission, while answering the opposition's questions on the issue of errors in the voter list, has said that if these issues were raised at the right time, the errors would have been corrected. The Commission clarified that the process of preparing the voter list is completely transparent and all political parties are included in it. The Commission said that the issue of errors in the voter list should have been raised at the time when claims and objections were sought on the draft list.

Process of preparing voter list

According to the Election Commission, the process of preparing the voter list for Parliament and Assembly elections in India is divided at several levels. The responsibility of preparing it is given to Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), who are SDM level officers. They are assisted by Booth Level Officers (BLOs). These officers take responsibility for the accuracy of the voter list.

Full attention was paid to transparency

The Commission said that when the draft of the voter list is ready, its digital and physical copies are given to all political parties. Also, it is also put on the Election Commission's website so that anyone can see it. After the draft list is released, voters and political parties are given a month's time in which they can register their complaints or objections.

Final list and appeal process

Even after the final voter list is printed, its copies are given to political parties and uploaded on the website. If anyone has any complaint, there is an opportunity to appeal at two levels. The first appeal can be made to the District Magistrate (DM) and the second appeal to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state or union territory.

'If these issues had been raised at that time then...'

The Election Commission said that some political parties and their booth level agents (BLAs) did not check the voter list at the right time nor pointed out the mistakes. The Commission says that if these issues had been raised at that time, the concerned officials could have corrected the mistakes. Recently, some political parties and individuals have raised the issue of mistakes in the old and new voter lists. On this, the Commission said that these issues should have been raised at the time when claims and objections were sought on the draft list. If these things had come to light through the right channel at the right time, the mistakes could have been corrected.

If there is any mistake in the voter list, please inform us.

The Election Commission stressed that complete transparency is maintained in preparing the voter list. The Commission has appealed to all political parties and voters to check the voter list and inform if there is any mistake. This will make the voter list more clean, which will help in strengthening democracy. The Election Commission made it clear that it is always ready to make the voter list better. But for this it is necessary that all parties fulfill their responsibilities at the right time.
