News Topical, Digital Desk : Cyclone Ditawah has wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka. The storm has destroyed more than 25,000 homes. The death toll from heavy rains and flooding has risen to 193, while 176 people are reported missing. In light of the worsening situation, the Sri Lankan President has declared a state of emergency.

Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency on Saturday and appealed for international assistance in response to the devastating devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwaha. Thousands of army, navy and air force personnel were deployed on the ground to deal with the disaster.

India helped its neighbor

India has expressed its solidarity with Sri Lanka during the crisis caused by Cyclone Ditwaha. Indian Air Force helicopters continue to rescue lives and provide immediate relief.

Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, Chetak helicopters deployed from INS Vikrant carried out search and rescue sorties in Sri Lanka and assisted the affected people. A video released by the Indian High Commission in Colombo shows the rescue operations from the aircraft, with personnel lowering ropes, harnesses and inflatable rafts to reach people trapped in floodwaters.

Why was it necessary to impose emergency?

Due to Cyclone Ditwah, continuous rains in Sri Lanka over the past few days have severely damaged road networks, bridges, railway lines and power grids. In many areas, entire settlements have been buried under landslides, and efforts to rescue them are continuously failing. To deal with this crisis, it became necessary to declare a state of emergency so that search and rescue operations could be expedited. In view of this, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake imposed emergency law. The imposition of emergency gave the President wide powers to deal with the disaster.

Over 25,000 homes destroyed

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) said the storm destroyed more than 25,000 homes. Nearly 78,000 people have been evacuated to state-run temporary shelters. The DMC has so far confirmed 13 deaths and 176 others are missing.

The Army, Navy, and Air Force are carrying out relief and rescue operations on a war footing. A total of 774,724 people from 217,263 families in 25 districts have been affected by this tragedy.

The effect of Ditvaah will be visible in India from today

After wreaking havoc in Sri Lanka, the effects of Cyclone Ditwah are now being felt in India. In view of the threat from Ditwah, alerts have been issued in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry. Rescue teams have already been deployed there.
