News Topical,Digital Desk : Voting has begun in Canada amid concerns over the policies of US President Donald Trump. Voting began at 7 am local time (7:30 pm Indian time). Voting is still going on till the time of writing the news.
The Liberal Party is leading in surveys
The results will start coming in around 10 am on Tuesday morning as per Indian time. Surveys are showing the Liberal Party ahead. This election will decide whether the Liberal Party will continue to be in power or the Conservative Party will come to power.
The main contest is between Prime Minister Mark Carney and opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, but this election is also a referendum on a man who is not even a Canadian citizen. That man is US President Donald Trump.
Trump's threats strengthened the feeling of patriotism
In fact, Trump's threats to make Canada the 51st state of America and to increase tariffs greatly strengthened the feeling of patriotism. This increased support for Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, as he was largely successful in convincing people that he is capable of competing with Trump with his experience in the economic sector. Carney has previously led the central banks of two countries, Canada and Britain, before assuming the post of Prime Minister.
Unpopular former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
He has tried to distance himself from former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has become extremely unpopular, while Poilievre has strongly raised the issues of inflation and rising crime. Trudeau, who proved unsuccessful in tackling inflation and American policies, announced his resignation from the post of PM in January this year, after which Carney was chosen as PM.
42.6 percent support for Liberals, 39.9 percent for Conservatives
Carney's Liberals have an edge over Poilievre's Conservatives in national support, according to a CTV News-Globe and Mail-Nanos poll released Sunday. Nanos estimated the Liberals at 42.6 per cent and the Conservatives at 39.9 per cent.
The EKOS poll showed the Liberals had a six-point lead. It was projected that the Liberals would win a majority in the 343-seat House of Commons.
Trump again said- we will make Canada the 51st state of America
US President Trump reiterated his call to make Canada the 51st state in an internet media post on Monday. He has talked about merging Canada with the US before as well.
"Good luck to the people of Canada. Elect a man with the power and intelligence to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, quadruple your car, steel, aluminum, lumber, energy and every other business so that Canada can become the 51st state," Trump said.
