New Delhi: The Ministry of Heavy Industries has selected Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Group for manufacturing 10 Gigawatt-Hour (GWh) capacity Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. According to the ministry, this selection has been done on the basis of quality and cost mechanism. ACC is an advanced technology for storing energy under which electric energy is stored in the form of electrochemical energy and then it can be converted into electricity when needed. It can be used in places ranging from electric vehicles to power backs.

Incentive of more than 3 thousand crores

Under the PLI scheme, the government will provide incentives of Rs 3620 crore for developing 10 GWh ACC storage capacity. Apart from Reliance, ACME Cleantech Solution, Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technology, Anvi Power Industries, JSW Neo Energy, Lucas TVS Limited had applied for ACC battery storage manufacturing under the PLI scheme. A proposal was brought to develop an ACC manufacturing facility with a capacity of 50 GWh in the year 2021 under the PLI scheme.

Dependence on petrol and diesel will be reduced

Two years ago, the first phase of allocation of ACC manufacturing under the PLI scheme has been completed. In the first phase, three companies have been given the task of developing 30 GWh ACC storage. The government has made a provision of Rs 18,100 crore to develop 50 GWh capacity of ACC.

With the development of ACC capacity, electricity can be stored at low cost and electricity can be used extensively in place of petrol and diesel, which will reduce our dependence on petrol and diesel and will also reduce the import bill substantially.
