News Topical, Digital Desk : Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has passed away. She had been battling multiple illnesses. It is noteworthy that just days before her death, her son, Tarique Rahman, returned to Bangladesh after 19 years of exile. Khaleda Zia has long been seen as a key figure in Bangladeshi politics. She served as Prime Minister three times. However, she was not always interested in politics. Her husband, Zia-ur-Rahman, used to call her a shy housewife. Let's find out who Zia-ur-Rahman was .

Who was Zia ur Rehman?

Zia was a captain in the Pakistani Army in the 1960s. However, during the 1971 Liberation War,  Zia-ur-Rahman rebelled against the Pakistani Army and took part in the war. Following Bangladesh's independence, he was appointed Chief of the Bangladesh Army Staff on August 25, 1975. He then became President of Bangladesh in 1977.

Became the first elected president

In 1978, Zia formed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The party subsequently won a landslide victory in 1979. Following this victory,  Ziaur Rahman became the first elected President of Bangladesh. Zia  had long feared for his life. Despite warnings from Bangladesh's intelligence department, he reached Chittagong. There, he was assassinated by a group of army officers. Lieutenant Colonel Motiur Rahman is said to have played a key role in Zia's assassination. He was enraged by the transfer of Major General Mohammad Abul Manzoor, the GOC of Chittagong. This resulted in the BNP losing its leader, and subsequently, Khaleda Zia entered Bangladeshi politics.
