News Topical, Digital Desk : With the start of Antimicrobial Awareness Week, concerns are once again being raised worldwide about the increasing misuse of antibiotics. Since 2015, the WHO has been raising awareness about the dangers of antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, every year. This problem has become so serious that, according to a study published in Science Direct, it could be the leading cause of deaths worldwide by 2050. So, let us tell you today whether you are also taking excessive medication. If you do, antibiotics may become ineffective on your body.

What is antimicrobial resistance?

According to experts, when bacteria or viruses in our body become so strong that medicines no longer work against them, it is called antimicrobial resistance. Antibiotics taken for common colds, fevers, or infections often cure us. However, if they are used excessively or incorrectly, bacteria can develop resistance to these drugs. According to a WHO report, 1.27 million people died directly due to antimicrobial resistance in 2019, while it was an indirect cause of 4.95 million deaths. This is why it is being called the silent pandemic of the future.

The threat of antibiotics is also increasing in India

. Billions of doses of antibiotics are used in India every year, and this figure is continuously increasing. According to a report published in The Lancet e Clinical Medicine, 83 percent of Indian patients have been found to have multidrug-resistant organisms. This means that common antibiotics have become ineffective on these patients. This condition is considered a major threat not only to patients but also to the country's healthcare system. According to this study, India is at the epicenter of a superbug explosion. The prevalence of MDROs in patients undergoing endoscopic procedures is much higher than in other countries. In India, MDRO has been found in 83 percent of patients, while in Italy it has been found in 31.5 percent, in America in 20.1 percent and in the Netherlands in 10.8 percent cases.

What warning did the doctor give?

Experts have warned about this problem that if proper steps are not taken now, then this situation will go out of control in the coming years. At the same time, it has also been said in the new WHO report that South East Asia, which also includes India, is one of the most affected areas. Experts say that antibiotics are not needed for every disease. Many times viral fever or cold get cured on their own in 2 to 3 days. At the same time, taking antibiotics without doctor's advice becomes even more dangerous.
