The Trump administration is reducing the number of refugee admissions to the US to 7,500 for the 2026 fiscal year. White South Africans will also be given priority.
US President Donald Trump imposed a ban on refugee arrivals upon taking office. But despite Pretoria's insistence that white South Africans not face persecution in their home country, he has made an exception. Under the new decision, the US will accept only 7,500 refugees annually, most of whom will be from South Africa.
The administration released the information in a notification on Thursday. According to the notification, the United States will welcome only 7,500 refugees in fiscal year 2026, down from more than 100,000 per year under Democratic President Joe Biden.
These people will get preference
According to the White House memo, the majority of those admitted during the fiscal year starting October 1 will be white South Africans and "other people who are victims of illegal or unjust discrimination in their respective countries." It said admission numbers would be allocated primarily among Afrikaners in South Africa.
It is noteworthy that US President Donald Trump campaigned for the White House with a promise to deport millions of illegal immigrants and in January signed an executive order suspending the US refugee admissions program.
Over two million people have been admitted since 1980
Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, said that since 1980, more than two million people fleeing persecution have been admitted to the United States under this program. Now, it will be used as a pathway for white immigration.
