News Topical, Digital Desk : Texas Governor Greg Abbott in the US has said that Islamic Sharia law will not be implemented in his state. He has announced a ban on any such enforcement. He has also appealed to the people to report any pressure being exerted to enforce Sharia law.

The remarks came after a video from Houston aired in which the cleric urged shopkeepers not to sell alcohol, pork and lottery tickets. The governor described the incident as harassment and said Texas would not tolerate attempts to impose religious codes of conduct in public life.

There is no Sharia restriction

"I have signed laws banning Sharia law and Sharia premises in Texas. No business or individual should be intimidated by such fools. If anyone attempts to impose Sharia, report it to local law enforcement or the Texas Department of Public Safety," Abbott said.

Texas does not have a formal 'Sharia ban', but a 2017 law bill prevents courts from applying any foreign or religious code, including Sharia, if it interferes with US law.

'Abbott's statements are misleading'

Muslim advocacy groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, criticized Abbott's statements as misleading and said Sharia governs individual religious behavior, not civil law.
