Privacy protection is essential

"We are happy," Umbria's ombudsman Giuseppe Caforio told the ANSA news agency. He added that it was also important to protect the privacy of those involved. "This experiment has been good. Other meetings may take place in the next few days."

Last year, the court gave the order

In January 2024, an Italian court ruled that prisoners should have the right to intimate visits with their spouses and partners without guards. The decision also noted that conjugal visits are already recognised in several European countries, including France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Bedding will be provided in the room

Last week, the Italian Ministry of Justice issued guidelines regarding sex rooms. It said that prisoners who are allowed to have intimate meetings will be allowed to stay in the room for two hours. Bed and toilet will be provided in the room. According to the guidelines, it is necessary to keep the door of the room open. This is because if any need arises, the jail guards will immediately intervene.

Italy's prisons are in a bad state

Italy's jails are struggling with the huge overcrowding of prisoners. There are a total of 62 thousand prisoners in the country's jails. This is 21 percent more than the total capacity of the jails. The condition of Italy's jails is the worst in Europe. The rate of suicides has also increased here.
