News Topical, Digital Desk : An emotional scene unfolded in Basti, Uttar Pradesh, when descendants of a family forcibly deported to Fiji 115 years ago reunited. The sixth generation couldn't hold back their tears upon meeting each other. Fiji residents Ravindra Dutt and his wife Keshni Dutt had gone to Kabra village in the Bankati block in search of their relatives. With the help of a Panchayat representative, the two families were reunited.
Ravindra Dutt and his wife were overjoyed after reaching their loved ones and they promised to go to Fiji and return soon and also talked about taking their Indian family to Fiji.
Great grandfather was taken to Fiji by the British
This story actually begins in 1910. Garib Ram, a resident of Kabra village in Basti, opposed the British. The enraged British arrested him and deported him to Fiji, never to return to India. There, he was forced to work as a laborer in sugarcane fields. Garib Ram settled there, married, and raised a family. His future generations grew up in Fiji, but his search for roots never stopped.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Dutt found his great-grandfather's old "immigration pass" (indentured labour passport), which read Gareeb Ram, father's name Ram Dutt, and native village Kabra (Basti). This single document brought Ravindra to India.
Reached Ayodhya for the first time
Ravindra Dutt first visited Ayodhya in 2019, visited Ram Lalla, and returned. He then continued to connect with people via the internet, social media, and social media, finally arriving in Basti this year. Ravi Prakash Chaudhary, the village head representative, helped him. Ravi Prakash explained, "When I learned that someone from Fiji was searching for their family, I discussed the matter with Ravindra. Then I went to Ram Dutt's descendants in the village. They found an old document bearing the name of the poor Ram. The connection was then made."
Garib Ram's grandsons, Bhola Chaudhary, Gorakhnath, Vishwanath, Dinesh, Umesh, Ram Ujagar, and the entire family were present in Kabra village. When Ravindra Dutt and Keshni embraced them, every eye was moist. Ravindra said, "After 115 years, we found our roots. Now India is our second home. You must all come to Fiji."
Promises to take family to Fiji soon
During this time, the two families shared a meal, posed for photographs, and promised to never break their bond. Ravindra and Keshni returned to Fiji with joy in their eyes at seeing their loved ones and promised to bring their Indian family to Fiji soon.
