News Topical, Digital Desk : Iran's Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said on Monday (April 13) that the two sides were just inches away from reaching an agreement when they faced excessive demands, changing goals and a blockade.
Araghchi's comments come a day after the two sides met in Pakistan recently to try to find a lasting solution to the West Asian conflict, but they failed to achieve any success. This has left many wondering what exactly transpired during these high-level talks.
'Had a conversation with Nek Iraqe'
Araghchi said Iran had engaged with the US with the good intention of ending the war in the highest-level talks between the two countries in nearly 50 years. He did not elaborate on what exactly happened to hinder the nearly reached agreement.
" Iran engaged in good faith negotiations with the US to end the war, in the most intense high-level talks in 47 years. But when we were just inches away from the 'Islamabad MoU,' we faced excessive demands, changing goals, and obstruction. No lessons were learned, " Araghchi wrote in a post on X.
'I didn't trust America'
He added, "Goodwill breeds goodwill. Hostility breeds hostility." Hours before Araghchi's comments, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also indicated a deal could still be reached, but called on the US to abandon its dictatorship and respect Iran's rights.
Iranian Parliament Speaker MK Ghalibaf, who led Iran's delegation to Pakistan, also said that Iran had started the talks with the desire to reach a deal, but it did not trust the other side.
“My colleagues in the Iranian delegation put forward forward-looking initiatives, but the opposition ultimately failed to win the confidence of the Iranian delegation during this round of negotiations,” he said.
