Cancer is a serious disease, which has become a matter of concern all over the world. Especially in India, cancer cases are increasing rapidly in the recent past, which is a serious health concern. This disease can make anyone its victim, irrespective of age or gender.

Not only this, in the last few years, there have been more cases of cancer in women (Women Cancer Risk in India). In India, women are falling prey to this serious disease more than men. This is not what we are saying, but WHO's own figures tell us. Let us tell you why cancer cases are increasing among women in India-

New cancer cases in India in 2022

WHO figures confirm the increasing cases of cancer among women in India. According to the Global Cancer Observatory of the World Health Organization (WHO), about 14,13, 316 new cancer cases were reported in India in the year 2022.

new cases of cancer

  • Men: Around 6,91,178 new cases.
  • Women: Around 7,22,138 new cases.

Death rate from cancer:

  • Men: Around 4,70,055 deaths.
  • Women: About 4,46,772 deaths.

It is clear from the above statistics that in India women are more prone to cancer than men. However, the statistics also make it clear that the number of men dying from cancer is higher.

Most common cancer types in women

  • Breast cancer: The most common cancer in Indian women, accounting for approximately 26.6% of all new cancer cases.
  • Cervical cancer : This accounts for about 17.7% of new cancer cases.
  • Ovarian cancer: about 6.6% of cases.
  • Oral cancer: less common at about 5.0% but still significant.

Why women are at higher risk of cancer

Women are at a higher risk of cancer than men due to many reasons. Women are more likely to get cancer due to biological, genetic and environmental factors (Cancer Risk Factors). These factors cause cancer in women-

  • Hormones: The hormones estrogen and progesterone may influence the development of breast and ovarian cancer .
  • Genetic mutations: Genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 contribute significantly to the higher risk of cancer in women.
  • Gene polymorphisms: Differences in gene polymorphisms may contribute to cancer cases.
  • Exposure to carcinogens: Exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, pollution, and other toxins in the environment can increase the risk of cancer.
  • Lifestyle factors: Women often neglect their health and diet. Poor diet, lack of physical activity, weight and stress levels can all increase the risk of cancer.
  • Reproductive factors: The age at which a woman begins having periods and when menopause occurs can affect her risk of breast cancer.
