The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday honoured India for eliminating trachoma, an eye disease that can lead to blindness, making it the third country in South East Asia to achieve this feat.

Earlier, Nepal and Myanmar have achieved this feat. WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Saima Wajid said, India has achieved this success due to the strong leadership of the government and the commitment of ophthalmologists and health care workers. Wajid also gave a certificate to India at the Public Health Award ceremony held in the national capital.

How is trachoma spread?

Trachoma is transmitted due to lack of sanitation and dirty water supply. The disease can be spread directly through contact with an infected person or indirectly through flies. WHO also congratulated Bhutan, Maldives, Timor-Leste for achieving the goals of eliminating various diseases.

Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Thailand were also honoured for reducing under-five mortality rate, neonatal mortality rate and stillbirth rate.
