Islamabad: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday urged the Supreme Court to decide its review petition challenging the court's decision to deny the party its 'bat' symbol for the general elections.
In its application to the Supreme Court, PTI said that the scope of the decision under review in the reserved seats case is already being debated before the full bench, while the reserved seats case is being heard by all the judges of the Supreme Court.
PTI blames Election Commission
The question is whether the stripping of the 'bat' symbol from PTI resulted in them not being allotted reserved seats or whether the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) misinterpreted the Supreme Court order, Pakistan newspaper Dawn reported.
PTI, in its petition, argued that the issue of reserved seats and their entitlement will remain "unresolved" till it is heard by a larger bench along with the reserved seats matter and also sought an early hearing otherwise the petitioner would suffer "irreparable loss and injury".
PTI's plea that the applications raised fundamental and important questions requiring hearing by a larger bench was accepted and the applications were reviewed by a five-judge bench, reported Dawn.
What did PTI say in the review petition?
Through the application, the party said the implementation of the Supreme Court's January 13 verdict was causing "huge losses" to the PTI and the general public, who were deprived of choosing the party of their choice in the general elections.
PTI members are unable to contest elections under a common election symbol due to the said verdict, in which the court upheld the ECP's December 22, 2023 order depriving the party of its election symbol, reported Dawn.
On Sunday, Justice Athar Minallah of the Supreme Court of Pakistan asked the Election Commission of Pakistan to satisfy the Supreme Court that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had been legitimately excluded from the electoral process, thereby waiving its claim to the reserved seats.
