Donald Trump has taken many big decisions as soon as he became the President of America. Trump pardoned his supporters arrested for the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, a few hours after taking oath as US President for the second time.
"These are hostages, about 1,500 people. They are being pardoned," Donald Trump was quoted as saying at a signing ceremony shortly after arriving at the White House.
More than 1 thousand people were accused
As of early January, more than 1,580 people had been criminally charged in federal court in connection with January 6, with more than 1,000 having pleaded guilty, according to the Justice Department.
The pardon had been expected after Donald Trump's years-long campaign to rewrite history of the January 6 attack. The mob assault on the US Capitol left more than 100 police officers injured and threatened the peaceful transfer of power.
Trump had given indications earlier too
- Even before returning to the White House, Donald Trump had indicated that he would consider the cases of the January 6 accused on a case-by-case basis.
- Calling the rioters patriots and hostages, Trump had claimed that the Justice Department treated them unfairly.
- Donald Trump has immediately issued orders in this matter after assuming office.
When did the attack happen?
After Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 presidential election, his supporters took to the streets and resorted to massive violence. During this time, people entered the US Capitol and vandalized it. More than 1,500 accused people are on trial in this case. More than 250 people have been convicted of crimes. No jury has completely acquitted the Capitol riot defendant.
