The Israeli Parliament on Thursday gave final approval to a key bill that would give politicians more power in the selection process of judges. This bill has become a major reason for the ongoing protests against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Under the bill, the judges selection committee will have nine members, with the previous members selected by the Israel Bar Association being removed and replaced by representatives selected by the government and the opposition.

Opposition parties alleged

Opposition parties have called this bill an attack on an important pillar of Israel's democracy. The opposition protested against it and abstained from the final vote. Justice Minister Yariv Levin supported this new law and said that this law will be effective from the next parliament term and it will ensure a balanced and representative formation of the selection committee. He said that through this bill, qualified candidates will not be excluded from selection due to their views.

There was protest against the passing of the bill

Protests have intensified since the bill was passed. "Today is a very important day because the government has passed a law that is an important part of democracy and has now turned it into a political issue," said Ronnie Malmuk, who attended a protest in Tel Aviv.

Let us tell you, this bill can have a deep impact on Israeli politics and it is one of the many issues that gave rise to massive protests in Israel in 2023.
