More than 11 armed people are reported to have been killed in a shootout with security forces in Manipur on Monday. This incident happened when a group of people tried to attack a police station. Sources said that a soldier is also reported to have been injured in this attack.

 

Violence between Meitei and Kuki

Sporadic violence has been taking place in Manipur since last year. Following the continued violence between the majority Meitei community and the tribal Kukis, the court had ordered the state government to consider extending the special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education given to the Kukis to the Meitei people.

 

The goons attacked a police station

At least 250 people have been killed and about 60000 displaced since the fighting began in May 2023. Krishna Kumar, deputy commissioner of the state's Jiribam district, said miscreants attacked a police station this afternoon. 11 attackers were killed in retaliatory action by central security forces.

 

A security officer was seriously injured

He said tension has been brewing in the area since last week, when a 31-year-old tribal woman was burned to death. A local police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a security official was seriously injured in the attack.

It is noteworthy that on October 15, a group of elected members of the State Assembly representing the Kuki-Jo-Hmar, Meitei and Naga communities discussed the current situation in the state and appealed to the people of the state to stay away from violence.
