News Topical, Digital Desk : Amitabh Bachchan's superhit film 'Don' director Chandra Barot died on Sunday in Mumbai at the age of 86. His wife Deepa Barot confirmed the news.
Barot was ill for a long time
Barot was undergoing treatment for his lungs for the last several years. Before his demise, he was being treated by Dr Manish Shetty at Guru Nanak Hospital in the city. Earlier, he was admitted to Jaslok Hospital.
"He was suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for the last seven years," his wife Deepa Barot told The Times of India.
Amitabh Bachchan reacted
Amitabh also reacted to this in his blog. The actor wrote, “My dear friend and director of Don, Chandra Barot passed away this morning... This loss is hard to describe in words.. We worked together, but he was more of a family friend than anything else.. I can only pray.”
The film director was born in Tanzania
Barot was born and raised in Tanzania. After working in a bank, he decided to come to India. He then joined the film industry under the guidance of Manoj Kumar. Chandra not only gave Indian cinema the cult classic 'Don' but also worked as an assistant director in films like 'Purab Aur Paschim', 'Yadgaar', 'Shor' and 'Roti Kapda Aur Makaan'.
Got the most popularity from Don
After Don, Barot directed the Bengali films Ashrita (1989) and Pyar Bhara Dil (1991). But several of his next films, such as Boss and Neel Ko Pakadna...Impossible, either remained incomplete or did not release. Meanwhile, his Don franchise became so popular that it created a world of its own.
Barot's success came in 1978 when he directed Amitabh Bachchan's film Don. The film flopped at the box office in the first week, shattering Barot's dreams, but soon it gained momentum thanks to word of mouth publicity and the film became an all-time blockbuster.
