News Topical, Digital Desk : The serial 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' which aired about 25 years ago had reached the pinnacle of popularity. Tulsi Virani's values, understanding and intimacy in the show had attracted people from India and abroad.
What was the thought process behind creating the original show?
Ekta: Amma used to live with us. I had seen her life. Earlier the name of this show was Amma. Then we changed its name to 'Kyunki... Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. Characters like Baa (Sudha Shivpuri) live in every house. The relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is so strange, but both love the same person. This is how the story was created.
She is making a comeback to acting after 17 years. Did you miss it?
Smriti: No. As a cabinet minister or MP, you can bring about a change in society and serve the country. There cannot be a greater blessing from God than this. The country's parliament and constitution are supreme. Nothing is more important than them.
You even ventured into politics during the original show.
Smriti: There are many units in the RSS with which I was working. My maternal grandfather was in the RSS. My mother was associated with the Jansangh as a common worker. I wanted to contribute in policy making, so I entered organisational politics in 2003. It was a very well thought out decision.
How did you think of returning to the show after 25 years?
Smriti: For me, this show is a homecoming and it is a limited-episode series. I have not watched any of my shows on OTT, so all these factors were justified for me. New experiences pave new paths.
Will this work be limited to Tulsi or will it continue further?
Smriti: For now, it will be limited to Tulsi. I don't think that anyone in our country's politics would have seen the peak of success in two different fields, media and politics, simultaneously. By the grace of God, I am that special person. It will be better if we don't open that layer right now. Let's see what peaks are ahead.
The audience of OTT and TV is different. In such a situation, how big a challenge is it to satisfy both?
Sumanta: If the story is good, both the audiences will be inclined towards it. I prefer stories that entertain and also shape values. When the first promo came, there was a lot of enthusiasm among the youth. They said that they had heard about it from their mothers. We want to see a new story.
Is there pressure for the show to return?
Ekta Kapoor : There is a fear whether the new show will live up to the imagination of the audience or not. The issues that we have to raise through entertainment, the value system that we have to inculcate, the discussions that we have to initiate in homes, this show will do all that.
Sumanta: Times have changed, but some fundamental things have not changed for the society. This show has had a cultural influence on how people should raise their children. The same expectations are there from the new show. Now the challenges are more, but Ekta tells the story in a great way.
What issues will be discussed this time?
Ekta: Parenting is a big issue. You run the house in your own way, children have their own choices. Apart from this, other issues have also been raised.
