The next Maha Kumbh is going to be organized in Prayagraj Allahabad. It is organized only in Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. There is a mythological story behind it. Let's know about it.

Kumbh festival 2025 royal bath dates (Kumbh 2025 Snan Dates)

Maha Kumbh begins with Paush Purnima bath, which is on 13 January 2025. At the same time, Kumbh festival will conclude with the last bath on the day of Mahashivratri on 26 February 2024. During this time, the dates of royal bath are going to be something like this.

  • 14 January 2025 - Makar Sankranti
  • 29 January 2025 - Mauni Amavasya
  • 3 February 2025 - Basant Panchami
  • 12 February 2025 - Maghi Purnima
  • 26 February 2025 - Mahashivratri

Why is Maha Kumbh held?

The legend of Maha Kumbh is associated with Samudra Manthan. According to the legend, when the Samudra Manthan took place between the demons and the gods, it was decided to divide all the gems obtained from the churning among themselves. All the gems were divided by the demons and the gods with mutual consent, but a war broke out between the two sides for the Amrit (nectar) obtained during this time.

In such a situation, to save the Amrit from the demons, Lord Vishnu gave the pot of Amrit to his vehicle Garuda. When the demons saw that the Amrit was with Garuda, they started trying to snatch it. In this scuffle, some drops of Amrit fell at four places on the earth i.e. Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Wherever these drops fell, today Kumbh Mela is organized at the same place after an interval of 12 years.

That is why it is organized every 12 years

During the Samudra Manthan, there was a 12-day long fight between the gods and demons for getting Amrit. According to the scriptures, twelve days of the gods are equal to twelve years of humans. Therefore, the great festival Kumbh is held at every place after twelve years. The movement of the planet Jupiter is also considered to be one of the reasons for Kumbh being held in 12 years, which is as follows -

  • When the planet Jupiter is in the Taurus sign and during this time the Sun God comes in Capricorn, then the Kumbh Mela is organized in Prayagraj.
  • Similarly, when Jupiter is in Aquarius and during this time Sun God comes in Aries, then the Kumbh event is organized in Haridwar.
  • When Sun and Jupiter are in Leo then Maha Kumbh Mela is held in Nashik.
  • When Devguru Jupiter is in Leo and the Sun is in Aries, the Kumbh Mela is held in Ujjain.
