Karnataka's Davanagere police has achieved success in a major bank case. Davanagere police has solved the robbery case that took place 6 months ago in SBI bank in Nyamati area. Along with this, 6 people have been arrested in the case and 17.750 kg of gold jewellery stolen from the bank has been seized from the accused.

The robbery took place in October 2024

According to the information received, after a two-day weekend on October 28, 2024, officials of the Nyamati SBI bank branch were shocked to find that one of their strong room lockers was broken open with a gas cutter. The thieves had removed the iron grill from the window to get inside, broke the locker and looted the gold. Not only this, to mislead the police, they took possession of the DVR of the CCTV and sprinkled chilli powder at the crime scene to hinder forensic investigation.

Police scanned CCTV footage for 50 kilometres

Following this, the police registered an FIR at the Nyamati police station under various sections of the BNS. Top officials, including the IGP, SP and forensic teams, immediately assessed the situation. Several police teams then conducted a thorough search within a radius of 8 km, as well as reviewed CCTV footage from a radius of 50 km, mobile tower dumps and interstate toll data.

Police investigated in many states

Subsequently, despite the thieves' meticulous planning, the police traced links to previous bank robbery attempts, including the SBI bank robbery attempt in Holehonnur, Bhadravathi (August 2024). Technical evidence led the police to the notorious Kakarala gang of Badaun in UP, which has been involved in similar crimes in South India.

Between November 2024 and February 2025, police teams conducted high-risk operations in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, arresting 5 members of the Kakrala gang namely Guddu Kalia, Aslam alias Tentun, Hazrat Ali, Kamruddin alias Sareli Babu and Babu Sahan. These individuals have a history of robbing gold in Karnataka. However, after finding no evidence of their direct connection to the Nyamati SBI robbery, investigators continued their investigation.

This is how the police found out

During further investigation, the police found a new gang of suspects hailing from Tamil Nadu. Acting on the intelligence inputs, the officers arrested the real masterminds of the robbery namely Vijay Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Abhishek, Chandru, Manjunath and Parmanand.

Learned robbery from Money Heist and YouTube

Police said that Vijay Kumar and Ajay Kumar, along with their brother-in-law Parmanand, had been running a sweets business in Nyamati for many years, while the other three accused were local residents. Mastermind Vijay Kumar had planned the robbery for more than 6 months, for which he took inspiration from TV series like Money Heist and learned theft techniques from YouTube.
