Why is Iran changing its capital:  Some time ago, Indonesia had decided to change its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara. Before this, many countries including Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Tanzania, Nigeria and Pakistan have changed their capital cities.

Now on the same lines, Iran is also preparing to change its capital. Iran is removing the capital status from Tehran city and making Makran the new capital. Iran government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani has also confirmed this.

Iranian spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said Iran's new capital would be in the south of the country. Tehran, a city with a population of over 9 million, is under considerable pressure.

Not only this, Tehran is counted among the most polluted cities in the world. People living in Tehran are facing shortage of basic things like water, electricity and cooking gas. Apart from population pressure, another reason for changing the capital is that the risk of earthquake has increased in Tehran.

Why was Makran chosen as the capital?

Now the question arises that why did the Iranian government choose Makran to change the capital from Tehran. Actually, this city is a coastal area located in the south of Iran, whose coastline is about 1000 kilometers long. Making Makran the capital will greatly help in developing the sea-based economy.

The natural resources of this region can make Makran a major hub for business and maritime activities around the world. Iran wants to make the Makran area a new maritime trade corridor. On the other hand, this will facilitate connectivity between Central Asia and the Indian Ocean.

These are the problems facing Tehran

  • It has been more than 200 years since Tehran was made the capital of Iran. Therefore, this city is not as modern as the capital of other countries around the world.
  • The population of Tehran is currently 9 million. It may reach 2 crore in the next 30 years. Due to this, it will become difficult to manage the population in this city.
  • The crisis of water, electricity and cooking gas is continuously increasing in Tehran. There is a severe shortage of electricity and water in many areas.
  • Tehran, the current capital of Iran, is included in the list of the most polluted cities in the world. According to the Iranian Health Ministry, every year 6400 people die due to air pollution in Tehran alone.
  • Tehran is counted among seismically risky areas. Seismologists have warned that a major earthquake in Tehran could put the lives of millions of people at risk.

Will Iran's new capital be closer to India?

If Iran changes its capital, India will also benefit from it. Iran's new capital Makran will come closer to India. India is developing Chabahar Port in the Makran region itself. Having the capital in this region will lead to progress in the entire region.

It will take time to build the new capital of Iran. It will also cost a lot. For this reason, many people in Iran are not happy with this idea. Makran is the same area where more than a third of Alexander's army died.

In fact, when Alexander's army passed through this region after the war with Porus in India, the soldiers were unable to bear the extreme heat and lack of water and one-third of the army was destroyed.
