Karnataka police have killed Vikram Gowda, one of South India's most notorious Naxalite leaders, in an encounter in Udupi district. During this, three of Vikram's associates managed to escape. Home Minister G Parameshwara announced this to the media on Tuesday.
Gowda was a criminal with a reward of Rs 5 lakh
A reward of Rs 5 lakh was declared on Vikram. More than 50 cases are registered against him in several states. G Parameshwar said that the police was searching for Vikram Gowda for the last 20 years and every time he managed to escape. The police force was keeping an eye on the activities of Vikram Gowda. On receiving reliable information about his activities, the police started an operation. During this, Vikram encountered the police in Kabinele forest area. He started firing at the police team. He was killed in retaliatory action by the police.
Gowda's name was in the most wanted list
Vikram Gowda, who was killed in an encounter with the police, has more than 50 cases registered against him in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. According to the police, he was on the most wanted list of the Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu state police departments. Vikram, a resident of Kudlu Nadvalu village in Hebri taluk of Udupi district, was leading the Naxalite movement in Karnataka. The police department had announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone providing information about him 10 years ago.
Parmeshwar said efforts are on to bring those involved in Naxal activities into the mainstream. He said many Naxals from Pavagada and other places have laid down their arms and have been given necessary help from the government to lead a normal life. He said these efforts will continue if anyone wants to surrender.
