Air pollution has become a matter of concern worldwide and many measures are being taken all over the world to deal with it. This can cause many health problems. Meanwhile, recently a shocking study has come out regarding air pollution and constantly increasing temperature. In this study, it was found that air pollution and increasing temperature are one of the major reasons for increasing stroke cases worldwide.
A new report published in The Lancet Neurology journal has looked at data from 1990 to 2021 to assess stroke deaths, causes, risk factors, etc. in 204 countries. Let's know what this new study of Lancet says-
What does the study say?
This study is an analysis of the latest Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study published in 2021. It found that South Asia, along with Latin America, Central Asia and Africa, is one of the places where outdoor air pollution is a high risk factor for stroke deaths and disabilities. At the same time, unlike Western Europe or North America, stroke-related deaths and disabilities are higher in South Asia due to household air pollution. These analyses showed how strokes and their associated causes vary across different regions.
Air pollution is more dangerous than smoking
The study also revealed that air pollution was the second biggest risk factor for stroke- related deaths and disabilities worldwide, after high systolic blood pressure. The frightening thing about this study is that air pollution has become the second biggest risk factor for stroke worldwide, surpassing smoking for stroke. The risk of stroke from air pollution was 16.6 percent, while the risk from smoking was 13.3 percent. The study said that in the year 2021, a total of 11.9 million new stroke cases were reported in the world.
