The population is growing at a rate of about 10 percent
According to the Sample Registration System Report (SRS) 2023 by the Registrar General of India, the fertility rate in the country is declining, due to which there has been a sharp decline in the population in the age group of zero to 14 years. At the same time, the population of people above 60 years is increasing at a rate of about 10 percent.
According to the report, the share of the population in the age group of 0 to 14 years declined from 41.2 percent to 38.1 percent during 1971 to 1981. Whereas during 1991 to 2023, this population declined from 36.3 percent to 24.2 percent.
Decline in total fertility rate in the country
The decline in the total fertility rate in the country has been blamed for this, which has come down from 5.2 in 1971 to 1.9 in 2023. According to SRS, this report has been prepared by surveying 88 lakh people. In this, data has been prepared on the basis of indicators like demography, fertility and mortality rate.
According to the report, the data collected from all the states and union territories indicate that in the age group of 0 to 14 years, the number of boys is more than that of girls. Only in the rural areas of Delhi, the number of girls has been found to be more than that of boys.
In the report, the population in the age group of 15 to 59 years increased from 53.4 to 56.3 percent during 1971-1981. Whereas between 1991 and 2023, this figure increased from 57.7 to 66.1 percent.
This population is highest in Delhi
This population is also called the working age group and this population was found to be the highest in Delhi at 70.8 percent, while Telangana at 70.2 and Andhra Pradesh at 70.1 percent are at second and third place respectively. Bihar has the lowest population of this age group at 60.1 percent, Rajasthan at 63.4 percent, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh at 63.9 percent. In Jammu and Kashmir, 70.1 percent of rural women are in the working age group.
In urban areas, Assam has the highest number of working women at 72.4 percent. In Delhi, the number of rural working men was 72.9 percent, while in Assam, the number of urban working men was 70.9 percent.
The population of senior citizens is also increasing
The population of senior citizens above 60 years of age is also increasing in the country. In 2023, this population has increased at the rate of 9.7 percent. In this case, Kerala is number one with 15.1 percent senior citizens. At the same time, 14 percent people above 60 years of age are living in Tamil Nadu and 13.2 percent in Himachal.
Infant mortality rate falls, birth rate also falls
There has been a significant decline in the infant mortality rate (IMR) and infant birth rate in the country. According to the Sample Registration System (SRS) report of 2023, the infant mortality rate in the country has come down to a minimum of 25. There has been a decline of 37.5 percent in this as compared to 40 in 2013.
At the same time, a massive decline of 14 percent has been recorded in the infant birth rate in the last 10 years. In 2013, this rate was 21.4 percent, now it is 18.4 percent. The report also records a declining trend in the infant birth rate. In the last 10 years, the birth rate has fallen from 21.4 percent to 18.4 percent in 2023, in which a decline of 14 percent has been recorded.
One third of deaths are due to heart disease
Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in India. About 31 percent of deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases. This is followed by 9.3 percent deaths from respiratory infections, 6.4 percent from malignant tumors and 5.7 percent from respiratory diseases.
The report states that non-communicable diseases caused 56.7 percent of deaths in India in 2021-2023. Infectious, perinatal and nutritional conditions cause 23.4 percent of deaths.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the age group above 30, while suicide is the most common cause of death in the age group 15–29.
