News Topical, Digital Desk : The country's Supreme Court has sought a response from the central government on a petition filed by Congress leader Jaya Thakur seeking implementation of the Women's Reservation Act 2024 without waiting for the new delimitation process to begin.
The petition was heard by a bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan. Justice Nagarathna, the Supreme Court's only woman judge, commented on the matter, stating that women constitute the largest minority in this country.
Important remarks by Justice Nagarathna
Senior advocate Shobha Gupta, appearing for the petitioner, said that even after seven decades of independence, it is unfortunate that the petitioner has to approach the court for representation of women.
Commenting on this, Justice Nagarathna said, “The Preamble states that (all citizens) are entitled to political and social equality. Who is the largest minority in this country? They are women... about 48 percent. This is about the political equality of women.”
