The US has ordered non-emergency government officials to leave Iraq amid heightened tensions, CBS News reports. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff plans to meet Iran in the coming days for a sixth round of talks on the country's nuclear program.
Trump's statement
Trump, while attending a performance of Les Miserables at the Kennedy Center on Thursday, said that American military personnel are being pulled out of some Middle East countries due to the threat. Trump's statement came after the failed round of US talks with Iran. He said, "Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. We will not allow it."
The US State Department and military said on Wednesday that people who are not needed in the Middle East are being sent back because of the potential for regional unrest, as tensions rise amid deteriorating nuclear talks with neighboring Iran, according to the Times of Israel.
US State Department decree
"President Donald Trump is committed to keeping Americans safe at home and abroad. We are constantly assessing the status of appropriate personnel at all of our embassies," the State Department official told The Times of Israel.
According to the Times of Israel, the US State Department has allowed non-essential personnel and family members to leave Bahrain and Kuwait, giving them the choice of whether or not to leave the country.
