News Topical, Digital Desk : President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he will close Washington's Kennedy Center performing arts center for two years for construction, his latest move to transform the iconic venue since returning to the White House.

He announced the decision on social media. He said his proposal was to be approved by the Kennedy Center's board, which is filled with his chosen allies, just days after the premiere of "Melania," a documentary about the First Lady. Trump himself is chairman of the center's board of trustees.

What did Trump say?

"This important decision, made based on input from many highly respected experts, will transform a tired, dilapidated, and run-down center, which has been in both financial and structural disrepair for many years, into a world-class hub for art, music, and entertainment," Trump wrote in his post.

Neither Trump nor Kennedy Center President Ric Grenell, a Trump ally, have provided any evidence to support their claims that the building is in poor condition.

Will Trump's decision be opposed?

This sudden decision is sure to spark protests, as Trump is transforming this popular venue. It began as a National Cultural Center, but after President John F. Kennedy's death in 1964, Congress renamed it a "living memorial" to him. The center, which opened in 1971, is open year-round as a public showcase for the arts, including the National Symphony Orchestra.
