News Topical, Digital Desk : Often there is a tradition of giving gifts to friends and relatives on occasions like marriage, birthday or housewarming. During this time, some people give God's idols or photos as gifts from a religious point of view. But, is it right to do so? Can these things be given as gifts to anyone?

The importance of donation has been mentioned in many religious texts including Skanda Purana and Bhagavad Gita. Giving gifts to someone is also considered equal to giving donation. Therefore, before giving a gift to anyone, it is very important to know who you are giving it to and what you are giving.

Donation should not be made to the unworthy

Skanda Purana talks about 'Apaatra Daan' (gifting god statues dos and don'ts). It says that if a person is not deserving of your gift or he cannot take care of it or he will never use it, then such a thing should not be given to that person.

God's idol should not be given as a gift to anyone. Especially if you know that he is an atheist or will not take care of it properly, then these idols should never be given to that person. By doing this you also incur the same sin and may face troubles in life.

If you give an idol, which one should you give?

If you know that the person to whom you are gifting the idol is worthy of it (vastu rules for gifting deity idols), then the second question is which idol to give. Often people gift the idol of Radha-Krishna to newly married couples as they are considered to be the symbol of love.

But, despite so much love between Radha and Krishna, they were able to stay together for only a short time. They were never able to get married. Therefore, newly married couples should never be gifted the idol of Radha-Krishna. You can gift them the idol of Shiva-Parvati, Vishnu and Lakshmi.

Shiva and Parvati are seen as the balance between man and nature. They are the givers of auspiciousness and prosperity. Similarly, Vishnu and Lakshmi are considered essential for happiness, prosperity and a happy life.
