News Topical, Digital Desk : Around 2020, when the theatres were closed due to Covid-19 and a lot of entertainment came for the audience on OTT platforms, the creativity of Hindi cinema seemed to be decreasing. South cinema benefited from this. Because Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu films got praise from both the audience and critics.
Bollywood comeback in 2023
At the 70th National Awards, many major awards including Best Feature Film and Best Actor went to South Cinema which was once dominated by Bollywood. But this year, Bollywood made a grand comeback. Hindi films swept all the major categories, with Shah Rukh Khan winning Best Actor for Jawaan, Rani Mukerji winning Best Actress for "Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway" and Vikrant Massey starrer 12th Fail winning Best Feature Film. Best Hindi Film went to Kathal and Best Choreography went to the song Dhindora Baaje Re from Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.
South cinema dominated last year
Talking about last year, South Cinema, Malayalam, Kannada and Tamil had almost completely dominated. Malayalam film 'Aattam' won the Best Feature Film award while Kannada film 'Kantara' won the Best Popular Film award. Rishab Shetty was awarded the Best Actor award. Despite the release of big films, Hindi cinema got only 6 awards in all categories. Before that, in the 69th National Awards also, South Cinema Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada films had made headlines.
In 2023-24, Bollywood came back on track and started telling good stories. For example, 12th Fail was made on a modest budget of Rs 20 crore but its excellent story and real story made it a critics' favourite and a sleeper hit.
On the other hand, the film Jawaan, which cost around Rs 300 crore, presented social and political aspects together and touched the hearts of the critics as well as the audience. Shah Rukh Khan, who has been in the film industry for more than three decades, won the award for the first time and called it "something to remember for a lifetime" and said, “The National Award is not just an achievement, it is a reminder that what I do matters.”
Bollywood is back with 13 thousand crores
2023 is being said to be the most successful commercial year in the history of Bollywood. Because this year, along with big budget films, small budget films also earned a lot. Big budget films include films like Jawaan, Pathan, Animal, Gadar 2 and Salaar. In which Jawaan made the highest worldwide collection of Rs 1148 crore. On the other hand, if we talk about low budget films, then these include 12th Fail, Kathal, The Kerala Story. The budget of 12th Fail was only Rs 20 crore.
2023 has proved that there is still hope in Bollywood, there are people who tell good stories and there are seasoned actors to bring those stories to the screen. No matter how much nepotism and politics there is, on the other hand there are people who make good content, even if the budget is big.
