Musk explained that he purchased the single-letter domain X.com in 1999. At the time, he had the idea of ​​creating a platform that would simplify money management from a technological perspective. He said that at the time, there were only three single-letter domains: X, Q , and Z , and he wanted to choose X to create a " financial crossroads ," meaning a large financial platform.

According to Musk, the old banking system runs on many different databases that are neither real-time nor very secure. His dream was to create a single, real-time, and secure database that would make managing money-related information easier and faster.

From X.com to PayPal and then Twitter

Musk explained that X.com later became PayPal , which was acquired by eBay . Later, someone from eBay asked him if he would like to buy the domain back. Musk said that one reason for buying Twitter was to revive the old idea of ​​X.com , a platform that could serve as a clearinghouse for financial transactions.

Musk said that in China, people live their entire digital lives on WeChat , but there's no similar app outside of China. The idea behind X is to become a platform that goes beyond WeChat .

The name SpaceX also has a hidden 'X' connection

Musk explained that SpaceX 's full name is Space Exploration Technologies , but that the name was too long, so it was shortened to SpaceX . He said he likes the capitalized X for its design and look.

Musk revealed that his son , X Æ A- Xii , whom he jokingly calls "Lil X," was named after his mother. Musk said he even joked that people would think he was too fond of the letter X , but his partner wanted to keep the name.
