News Topical, Digital Desk : After the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, discussions are rife on who will be the next Vice President of the country. With the release of notification for the Vice Presidential election, nominations have also started being filed. No candidate's name has been announced by the NDA yet. India Block has also not yet decided the name of its candidate for the Vice Presidential election. Meanwhile, three nominations have been filed so far and all three have been rejected by the Election Commission.
Why were the nominations rejected?
According to media reports, the Election Commission has rejected the nominations of three people who had filed nominations for the Vice Presidential election under subsection (4) of section 5 (B) of the Vice Presidential Election Act. The three people whose nominations were rejected include Padmarajan, a resident of Salem in Tamil Nadu, Jeevan Kumar Mittal, a resident of Delhi's Moti Nagar and Rajasekhar.
Padmarajan and Jeevan Kumar Mittal attached certified copies of the voter list of their parliamentary constituencies, in which their names were registered as voters but this was before the notification for the Vice Presidential election was issued, so their nomination was cancelled. Whereas Rajasekhar could not deposit the security deposit of Rs 15,000, due to which his nomination was also cancelled.
Last date for filing nomination
The last date for filing nominations is August 21 and the documents will be scrutinized on August 22. The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is August 25. If necessary, voting for the post of Vice President will be held on September 9. Voting will be held from 10 am to 5 pm. Counting will also take place on September 9 and the name of the winner will be announced.
Who did the NDA authorise to select the candidate?
The NDA on Thursday authorised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president J P Nadda to choose the alliance's candidate for the vice-presidential election. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the alliance leaders took a unanimous decision to authorise Modi and Nadda, who are leaders of the House in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively, to decide on their candidate. With the NDA having a comfortable majority in the electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament, the alliance's candidate is almost certain to be elected to the constitutional post.
Will the CMs of the allied parties be present in Delhi?
Chief ministers of NDA allies are expected to be present in the national capital to join the process of filing nominations of NDA candidates. Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and NCP chief Ajit Pawar are also likely to be present. As against the maximum strength of 788 members, the effective strength of the two Houses is 781 as there are one vacancy in the lower house and six in the upper house. The ruling NDA has around 422 members, much higher than the majority figure of 391.
