Ecuador's National Electoral Council on Sunday declared President Daniel Noboa the winner of the country's presidential race as he maintained a consistent and unexpected 12-point lead over leftist Luisa Gonzalez during vote counting.
The conservative millionaire has an impeccable record in fighting crime. His outspoken law and order stance has helped Ecuador re-elect him to the top job.
will not accept the results
González told chanting supporters that she did not accept the results and would demand a recount, calling it the worst and most blatant electoral fraud in Ecuador's history. With nearly 93% of ballot boxes counted, Noboa had 55.8% of the vote, while González had 44.1%, a difference of more than a million votes.
Elections were also held in February
These results were in contrast to the first round in February, where Noboa finished only 16,746 votes ahead of Gonzalez. "We inform the people of Ecuador that there is an irreversible trend in the second round of voting, with more than 90% of ballot boxes processed nationally," Diana Atamant, head of the National Electoral Council, said in a statement to the press.
The winning couple are Daniel Noboa Ajin and (Vice-President-elect) María José Pinto. González expressed disbelief in the results in front of chanting supporters in Quito. "I refuse to believe that people would prefer lies to truth, violence to peace and unity," González said.
There was a close competition between the two leaders
Voters chose Noboa in the snap election held in October 2023. In the first round of elections held in February this year, Noboa got 44.17 percent while Gonzalez got 44 percent. Analysts expected a close contest between the two leaders in the results coming on Sunday. Voting began at 7 am local time and will end at 5 pm.
