News Topical, Digital Desk : The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released data on crimes in various states across India. The NCRB report states that the Union Territory of Delhi recorded the highest number of crimes against women in India in 2023. However, the report also states that crimes against women in Delhi decreased by 5.59 percent in 2023 compared to 2022.

How many cases were reported in 2023?

According to the NCRB report, over 13,000 cases of crimes against women were reported in the capital Delhi in 2023. There were 14,158 cases in 2022 and 13,982 cases in 2021. Delhi recorded the highest number of dowry deaths and rape cases among 19 metro cities. However, the report also states that the crime rate in Delhi per lakh population was 14.4 percent, which is lower than Indore and Jaipur.

How many rape cases were registered?

According to the NCRB report, 1,088 rape cases were registered in Delhi in 2023. Jaipur reported 573 cases, and Mumbai reported 196. There were 3,952 kidnapping cases registered in 2023. This rate was 52.2 percent, the second highest after Patna (71.3 percent). According to the report, six acid attack cases were registered in Delhi.

How many cases of dowry murder?

Delhi recorded 114 cases of dowry deaths, though this rate (1.5 percent) was lower than six other cities, including Jaipur, Kanpur, and Ghaziabad. Delhi also reported the highest number of cases of cruelty against women by husbands at 4,219. Delhi also recorded the highest number of cases of rape of girls under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at 1,048, according to the report.

Cybercrimes against women have been low in Delhi, with only 36 cases registered in 2023. Bengaluru (127), Hyderabad (53), and Lucknow (41) saw higher numbers of cases. These included crimes such as publishing or sending sexually explicit material, blackmail, defamation, and creating fake profiles.
