News Topical, Digital Desk : Former Deputy National Security Advisor Pankaj Saran on Wednesday underlined the impact of the West Asian conflict on India, calling it the "most serious crisis in our lifetime" and said New Delhi will have to wait for the storm to pass before returning to its previous position.
Speaking at a conference, he said the conflict was a manifestation of the abuse of "immense power" in the world. He lamented that the rules-based order had now been "destroyed."
He said the conflict in West Asia is so serious for us because it is not just happening on our doorstep but it impacts every aspect of India's future, be it our energy security, human resources, remittances, or our geopolitical options in the region.
The attacks on Iran are aimed at transforming its society, politics, and economy into a military power.
Saran, a former diplomat and strategic affairs expert, said the West Asia region has had a "history of turmoil" for the past 25 years, be it Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Sudan or Gaza.
We've seen everything. We have no solution except to wait for the Americans to stop the attacks and declare victory.
We're all just watching this happen. By 'we' I mean the whole world, including the Russians, the Chinese, the Europeans. When asked what role he sees for India, he said, "First, you have to be realistic about your capabilities."
He said, "Look at the major powers like Russia, China, Europe, they're all silent. So you can't just thump your chest or thump your desk or boast about your capabilities, because here's a situation where the world's most powerful military has decided to bomb Iran. So you just have to wait for the storm to pass."
